Potential New Book Idea…

August 28, 2022
JD Kirk

I’ve been writing full time since about 2008, and have learned a lot about my own personal writing process during that time. Coming up with ideas for books usually takes one of two forms for me.

Generally speaking, I’ll sit down with a big sheet of paper or a notebook and start scribbling down random thoughts that pop into my head. Then, I’ll pick the best ones, make connections, add new bits, delete others, and slowly but surely build up a plot outline.

Sometimes, though, a whole story will just ping itself into my head from nowhere. I’ll just be minding my own business, and then suddenly a story will appear there in my mind, more or less fully-formed.

That’s what happened this week, and suddenly I’m left with an idea for a book I’m not sure I should write. The idea was nagging at me so much yesterday that I wrote a blurb and mocked up a cover, just to try and satisfy that part of my brain, and get a bit of peace. I thought I’d share it with you and the rest of the VIP Club.

I’d love to hear what you think in the comments below.

Mockup only – not finished cover

THE GIRL WHO ONCE WAS

Thirty years ago, seven-year-old Heather Filson was snatched from her garden by a man in a red ski mask.

Five days later, she was found alive, bloodied and broken, and with no memory of what had happened to her.

Four other girls were not so lucky. Their bodies have never been found.

Nor has their abductor.

Three decades later, when the now-Detective Inspector Filson is brought in to investigate the disappearance of a girl from outside her Glasgow home, long-buried memories of her ordeal begin to surface.

And when fibres from a red ski mask are found at the scene, Heather must face the possibility that a monster from her past has returned.

He’s about to start killing all over again.

And, this time, there’ll be no escape.

Sounds a winner.. Looking forward to it.

        • Deb

It’s always interesting reading a book about a female main character written by a man so as long as it has JD’s usual warmth and humour I would definitely read it!

          • Andy

Definitely interested in a story centering on Heather Filson. Your central characters are always compelling and this looks like being the same.

        • Sally

Sounds good, but wouldn’t want Logan and the gang to be left behind and their stories diluted.

        • Patty

          Yep – would get!

          • Elaine

Sounds like a good read but PLEASE don’t stop writing logan or Hoon books

          • Andy

Ok, but how does Hoon arse everything up for her?

            And when is it out?

        • Irene

Sounds good, hope there is some humour in it though. Will definitely buy book and audible as usual.

        • Audrey

Oooh yes, I’m already hooked! Go for it!

        • Jeannette

Sounds promising! Do you know any female Scottish readers as good as Angus?

        • Nikki

Can’t wait! But please continue with DCI Jack Logan and Bob Hoon series!! Love them!

      • George

I would buy it, but is it going to generate extra revenue outwith your usual readers given the number of Scottish crime authors there are just now.

What would be ditterent about it from Logan books

        • Susan

Yep would buy it ! When are you publishing ?

        • Carlo

Sounds different (obviously) and interesting too. Give it a shot.

        • Ruth

I would buy it. I like the female detective lead.

        • Sheri

          Interesting x

      • Rene

        Do it!

        • Annemarie

I would love to buy it sounds as if its going to be another great book from yourself

        • Irene Robertson

Yep do it! Plot sounds great and if it follows the same format as Logan/Hoon then it will be a winner,

        • Kelly

O my god iv just copped onto who Heather is!! She’s a great character would love to find out more about her, Go for it!

        • Bethan

          Get writing it!!!

          • Karen

It sounds like the sort of book that I would buy. I look forward to meeting some new and intcharacters characters

        • Alison

Love it, I’d definitely buy it

        • Verity

Sounds good to me! I’d buy it! I am aware as previously mentioned there are a few authors out there writing about Scottish detectives etc yes I have read many of them, I am however not on their mailing list or joining VIP club. It’s all about the style of the writing as much as the content. You’ve certainly got my vote

        • Gaylyn

Don’t be like me, get writing. I have a really good idea but alas I’m not a writer of fiction. Seriously, it sounds really good… get writing.

        • Mark

Lots of potential to fill in the blanks of a character folk don’t know exactly why they don’t take to. Also a great deal of fun to be had with memories returning and what they could mean. Like this!

      • Kenny

Go for it. It sounds interesting.

      • Nina

I’m in favour. I’ll preorder etc

      • Julie

It sounds like a great plot and assume this would be a new investigator and team? If so, that would be great as I love how you create and develop characters and the way they interact with each other. I hope we’ll still have books with Logan and Hoon though!

      • Sarah

Would 100% want to read this.

      • Viv

Sounds good. Original, a DI with a back story I haven’t read about before. I’d read it, even though I have about 20 books on my Kindle to read and Logan coming along soon.

      • Gavin

Sounds intriguing, I would certainly buy it

      • Helen

        Sounds interesting
Hopefully some zany new characters we can get to know

      • Lori

Oh yes! Sounds like a great premise for a book!!

      • Sheila

Sounds great. Keep writing it. I will definitely buy it.

      • Sue

        Love it, intriguing 🤔

      • Samuel

Really interesting would like to read the rest

      • Donna

        Sounds good.

      • Ann

Now hurry up and write it !!

      • Vanessa

Heavy plot. Your usual humour could be hard to insert though I’m sure you’ll find a way. I’d love to read it.

      • Rose

Sounds a winner.. Hopefully I’ll be reading it in the not too distant future.

      • Tom

Sounds like an exciting and potentially intriguing plot. Go for it!

      • Maureen

Don’t take too long to publish! Keep DCI Logan and team in the scheme of things!

    • Helen

Sounds like it’s a good one to me. 😊

      • Susan

Would definitely read that. I doubt very much you will get any kind of negative response.😊

      • Phillip

Ooooooo interesting idea, definitely would give it a read.

    • Sarah

Anything you write is brilliant so yes 👏

      • Catherine

Sounds good. Give it a go young un

      • Susan

        Totally agree 👍

      • Lynne

        Oooh yes, sounds good.

      • Susan

Sounds like an excellent idea! I would absolutely buy it!

      • Vikky

Would definitely buy it. Sounds very intriguing.

    • Linda

      Yes please!

      • Gary

Hope she would have the same no nonsense approach as Logan.

        • Ann

Ooh sounds good, I’d definitely read it, go on give it a go it’ll most likely nag you like crazy until it’s on paper anyway, good luck ,👍

      • Amy

It sounds like it would be a great book.

      • Mary

Sounds great. Maybe beginning of a new series???

    • Kay

      Sounds good, I’d buy it.

    • Shirley

Just let me know when it is available!

      • Jean

Absolutely love all your books. This one sounds good too. Start writing.

    • Cherry

      Sounds great, go for it!

      • Margaret

I would definitely read this book.

      • Anita

Loved all your books so far! I’m in.

        • Diane

Lovely idea!! I am interested enough already to buy it. I am assuming this is the start of another series which would be interesting. Also curious as to why Glasgow and not the Highlands which fascinate me. Get writing….can’t wait.

    • Meredith

Yes. I like the concept. Would make a ‘give us more ‘ read.

      • Amanda

        I would definitely buy it.

    • Gabriellw

Sounds interesting. I hope Heather’s childhood trauma has left her with a sharp wit and a slightly left of normal outlook on life. Now that I think about it, much like most of your other characters. Get writing/walking. <3

      • Helen

Sounds good -might go someway to explaining why she’s such a biatch.

I would concentrate on events that made her a complex character (obviously with your usual injection of humour) and the actual “police investigation” as a side line otherwise you’ll be stepping on the toes of Logan at al.

You could use it as an introduction to your next new DI -a disgraced monk with a penchant for dressing as a drag queen😂😂

      • Robert

DI Heather Filson? Yet another multi-layered protagonist in the offing! Have loved all your characters so far, even Hoon. I also have a weird admiration, or perhaps sympathy, for Tyler. But I still resent the loss of Caitlyn McQuarrie, as she was my favourite. Your character development is excellent, as we come to know each of these (almost real) people.
Please keep them coming! Type until your fingers bleed! (Kidding; just until they are sore is OK.) My only regret is that I have caught up and now have to WAIT (sigh) for your new releases. There are worse problems …
Lang may your Lum reek! (4th gen Aussie from Scottish stock on both sides.)

      • Margy

        I’ll drink to that

      • Trish

I’m sure the way you will right it will be fresh, and no doubt, a bit humorous. However, there already are many books written with a similar theme, but none by one of my favorite authors, J.D Kirk.

    • David

Intriguing! Hooked by this plot idea. Would definitely read the book.

    • Janet

I would definitely buy the book. Go for JD!

    • Graham

Fine as long as she has a daft sidekick like Logan to add a bit of humour.

    • Alan

Sounds good. I like it when we learn more about the characters beyond the bounds of the Logan setting. Go for it.

    • Pete

Sounds interesting but needs to be something different to a lot of other detective novels doing the rounds.
You have the strong Logan characters and plots, is there room for another?

    • Vivien

      Yes please

    • Sally

Sounds like a great plot and one I would like to read. Already love your other characters so know this book would bring new ones into our reading lives x

    • Lisa

Really intriguing storyline, definitely interested in reading!

    • Andrew

Sounds like a great plot idea. I would buy it if you decide to write it.

    • Yvonne

I like it, it’s intriguing. I also like the fact its a woman who will be investigating. It will be good to see you write from a female perspective.

    • Emma

      Oh yes, that sounds good

    • Douglas

Put me down for a copy please

    • David

      I’ll definitely read it.

    • Jude

Sounds great, definitely a book worth writing! And reading!

    • Mark

Oh yes !! That sounds brilliant 👏👏

    • gail

Ooh yes sounds interesting, but please no clowns on the cover, too scary

    • Angela

Yes please! Sounds intriguing, let’s find out more!

    • Judith

Definitely go for it. I like it already.

    • Linda

Yes sounds already a good plot to keep you enthralled
Will wait for next i formation
      Linda

    • Carol

JD Kirk can only have great ideas, keep us updated.

    • John

Definitely sounds like another hit, don’t leave us waiting too long!

    • William

Would a red ski mask have lasted for 30 years? Or is it a copycat crime?

    • John

I like it. As one of the comments below said, we weren’t meant to like Heather Filson, were we? But this really does have potential. Especially if you’ve worked out where it’ going. Make her sympathetic!

    • Lucinda

LOVE it. I like a real psychological thriller – without many comedic antics involved.

    • Jane

Go for it. Sounds good to me.

    • Kitty

I would love to know what happened, who done it and why… there is so much scope with the premise, new additions to the cast of characters, and, oh, the possible twists and turns within the plot… please write “The Girl Who Once Was” soon.

    • Mary-lou

Wow I’m already hooked. Can’t wait

    • Joanna

Go for it! I’ll buy it!

    • Darleen

      Sounds great, keep going!

    • Barbara J Stevenson

      I’d buy it.

    • Mary

Seems a derivative idea but JD Kirk is an inventive author whose characters are always interesting. He could make this work.

    • Jim

      Sounds like a good story!

    • Kay

Yup, I’m in. I need to know what happens.

    • Annie

      Sounds good. Can’t wait.

    • Stephen

I would be interested to see how DI Filson’s memories reawakened to the horrors that are lying dormant. The mind is such a powerful tool. Can’t wait for this.

    • Joanna

Brilliant – already there waiting to turn the page!

    • Andy

I just love a good mystery!
And you do do a great mystery 😊

  2. Janice

I think it sounds very intriguing and I would definitely like to read this.

    • Elaine

      Looks great!

    • Shona

I’m in. Can’t wait to read Heather’s story.

    • Eryl

Sounds chilling! A make or break for Heather’s career and soul maybe. I tend to shy away from kids traumas generally but am sure you will overcome that by handling the detective work well and shifting the focus to solving the mystery with great characterisation and entertainment. Good luck.

    • Jacqueline

If Heather’s character is slightly off centre,if she can swear(when needed) like Hoon,if she has the detective skills of Logan your on a winner. As long as it’s not written in the first person it will work for me. I am already saving up my pennies.

  3. Kattrina

Hi, that sounds like it would be an a extremely good book to read. So yes please write it.

    • Jane

Yes i think you should develop this……you can’t write a bad book. 😊😊

  4. Linda

It sounds like a good plot and the type of book I would definitely read. It would be good if there was a bit of humour in there and maybe a curse or two.

    • Karen

      Sounds interesting 😀

      • Peter

Don’t think you have a choice, it’s already a done thing in your head so just let it out. Can I pre order it now ?

      • Jane

Sounds great, definitely one to read

      • Jean

I would be interested in this book, got me hooked already, looking forward to this one 👍

      • Donna

I’ll read anything you write tbh. I’d like to hear more about Heather for sure.

    • Richard

I would read it as I enjoy your books. Go for it!

  5. Auds

This book sounds amazing, I hope it comes to fruition! 🥰

    • Tommy

I’d definitely buy it as long it’s not a replacement for the Logan and Hoon books. If you decided to stop those books I think I’d have to hunt you down and show you the error of your ways😂🤣😂

    • Susan

Good idea. Sounds like an interesting new character.

  6. Rachel

    YES! Get writing please!!

    • Sheila

Oh yes. A female lead detective

      • Lisa

Sounds great, a female lead with a back story unique to her could take the character in so many different directions.

      • Derek

Don’t wait for our permission – be brave and just do it !! It will be great

      • Regina

        Sounds good, I’d read it

      • Ian

Hi , glad you were not around in Queen Victoria’s time , with all these thoughts popping into your head which contain Murder!
I’ll buy it if it becomes available . Am looking forward to Jack’s 15th on the 20th also .keep those thoughts coming and don’t seek help , or I’ll not know what to read HAHA . Cheers 🥃

  7. Margaret

I would buy this book in a heartbeat! Right up my street. When will it be available? xx

    • David

It’s a go for me get to my boy!!

  8. Trena

This story needs to be written…..I’d pre-order now!

  9. Amanda

Yes!! Absolutely love this idea! Would be so good to get a better understanding of Heather as she irked me quite a bit with Jack and Shona.

    • Sarah

Sounds like a good plan, probably didnt get to know Heather too well so we could warm to her, just like Hoon , it would also be nice for a female lead too x

      • Julie

I like the sound of this. I’d definitely read it.

        • Helen

Sounds interesting I would look forward to reading it.

        • Carol

          Yes!!!!!

    • Larry

Very interesting. I would buy it.

  10. Wendy

    Sounds good.

    • Sheila

Yup, yup, YUP! I warmed to Heather, latterly, so would love to have a story centred on her.

  11. Leigh

Definitely , she brought so much to the last Logan book with her sense of humour and hard arse attitude! Love it

  12. Eunice

    Start writing sounds another classic

  13. Wayland

    That’ll do nicely. 😉

  14. Crystal

Ok I need to know what happens. Please write this!!

    • Linda

      Sounds great. Would definitely buy.

  15. Angela

Heather, as in the incredibly unlikeable Heather from the Logan series? I assume her story will give her a more likeable personality!? I know it’ll be great coming from you, so go for it!!

    • Joe

I didn’t like Hoon much but he grew on me in his own books. I think folk don’t like Heather because of how she treated our Shona -:)

  16. Kathy

Hated her in her debut, but could be the beginning of a brilliant new series intertwined with our other heroes.

  17. Heather

Oh I don’t know 😬 I took a really, REALLY visceral dislike to Heather and wouldn’t want her in any of the Logan books again……but I’d probably give a stand-alone book a go. Purely because I know you’d write it really well and how you managed to turn so many Hoon haters around with his books. So, I’d say go for it especially if it keeps her from infiltrating the Logan books too much 😂

    • J

The concept sounds intriguing. The character of Heather Filson has blossomed into from a disliked character to an huh she’s got dimensions. My only concerns would be the age of the red ski man and if it is an apprentice or follower it’s not like mr whispers situation.

  18. Katy

    Sounds like a winner!

    • Wayne

I would buy it without hesitation

    • Patti

Yes please, I will read it and looking forward to the new Hoon story as he rocks.

  19. Paul

Didn’t really like her at first but she definitely grew on me. I’d happily read that book

  20. Janice

Sounds great, learning more about Heather would be good. The only thing that bothers me is how old is the guy in the ski mask!

    • Becky

Please write this! If you don’t my inner ‘Hoon’ may be unleashed!

      • Margaret

This sounds like a great story. Really liked Heather and her Glasgow style humour.

    • Lindy

That’s what worries me about this too. In these types of story lines it is often the previous killers son/daughter carrying on their work. Hopefully we will be surprised this time: however, I would still enjoy it

    • Kath

Could be very interesting. Although I didn’t like Heather when she first turned up in the book, I started to warm up to her attitude towards life and policing by the end and she struck me as being a bit of a female version of Hoon!! who I love by the way, such a great character.

    • Grant

Liked the character and the idea sounds good. Agree with another comment or about the potential age of the killer but apart from that, the more books you write, the better in my opinion

  21. Sandra

    Would definitely read it x

    • Barbara

I’d buy this book. Love your writing style and how you make me care about even the nastiest, crude character(Hoon).

    • Debbie Smith

Would be happy to see Heather Filson again!!!

  22. Lori

    Definitely would read it.

    • Jeannie

Yes please! Would read it obvs!!

      • Jeannie

Yes please write it. Looking forward to it already.☺

  23. Marchia

    Definitely sounds interesting.

    • Jennie

      Sounds right up my street.
I hope you go ahead with it.

  24. Sam

Love Heather’s character so would definitely read this!

  25. Jenny

Yup sounds a blast 💥 defo for me!

  26. Mariea

    Oh yes please

  27. Margie

I think you should walk with this and see where it goes. As Janice said earlier, how old is the guy in the ski mask. Or is it the same guy???

  28. Susan

Go for it , already want to read it !

    • barbara

Great idea especially if you make it a series. Don’t give up on Logan though!!

  29. Lynda

Absolutely would buy and read this book 📖

  30. Julie

    I’d love to read it.

  31. Patricia

I would buy it in a heartbeat. Don’t tease me!

  32. Georgia

I’d read this in a heartbeat, poor Heather hasn’t had it easy

  33. Hayley

Seems I’m in the minority of people who actually liked the character of Heather Filson. Loved how she wound the characters up in the Logan book but came up good in the end. Would love to read more about her

  34. Nicki

Sounds good. I definitely buy it

  35. Jennifer

I’m not a huge Heather fan but I do enjoy her relationships with Sinead and Shona. This would be interesting and I’m all in for all the JD Kirk characters of course.

    • Kate

Intriguing. Heather is not a character I like… but then neither was Hoon, and his three books (to date) had me totally hooked. So I’d read it the minute it came out.

Plus I love books where there is continuity and/or overlap of characters. Getting some insight into Heather’s backstory is a big draw! Go for it!

  36. Sue

It may explain why she is so horrid! Yes I would buy it, i might even sympathise with the character.

  37. Patricia

Yeah not like other people I liked heather’s personality. So I would love to listen to it on audio xx

    • Linda

      Sounds like another winner

  38. Shyam

What a brilliant gift you have. What to cook for dinner is usually topmost of the inspired ideas that pop into my mind!! Definitely will be getting that too.

    • Chris

Sounds really good I would definitely buy it

    • Val

That sounds fantastic 😀 I’d definitely buy it.
Be brilliant to have a strong female lead with a good sense of humour who puts up with no shit. No self pity or lingering self indulgence just gritty story lines that keep you guessing.

  39. Jackie

To be honest, if you wrote a shopping list I’d probably read it, so count me in!

    • Gladys

      Ditto

  40. Nora

    Yes please!!

  41. Maureen

Sounds like an idea to explore further. A great storyline

  42. Penny

Unless you plan to introduce Logan or Hoon into this new series I would make it a whole new female DCI or DC

I like it – it’s giving off Angela Marsons vibes!

    • Jackie

Sounds interesting, only caveat, this involving children would be darker and less room for the humour we have come to expect and enjoy. I’m sure you can get the balance right so would trust you and read it

  43. Lorna

    I would read it!!!

  44. Barbara

    Go for it 😁😁😁

    • Marie

When i start reading one of your books, physically CANT put it down till i finish it. So YES, YES, YES.

  45. Christine

    Yes please, sounds great

    • Edea

I’d buy it now!! Sounds really great, a good Starr to a new series!

  46. Jeanne

Brilliant idea! If you write it, we will all read it!

  47. Carol

    Yes please go for it

  48. Julie

Heather has certainly got a big enough character to have her own book. It’s also evident from previous Logan books she has a past that is just lurking in the background. I sense lots of layers to Heathers character to mess with the readers heads. Bring it on!

  49. Lee

Sounds like a great premise for a story, is this a link back to Owen Petrie? Either way I would definitely buy it.
As an idea,, what about a prequel to the story that could focus on the original unsuccessful investigation and give an early insight into why there’s was such a gap between the crimes.

  50. Greg

Not sure. If you write it I will read it and, no doubt, enjoy it but I think I’d rather you spent your time on anothr Logan book. Or Hoon.

    • Rebecca

Oooh, sounds great. Go for it! We need something to keep us going, between your other two series.

    • Nick

      Sounds interesting 😉

  51. Jan

    I’ll absolutely read it.

  52. Suzanne

    Yes, please!

  53. David

Yes, go for it. But there’d still be some Logan and Hoon books, wouldn’t there? They’re just too good to end. Many thanks. I LOVE your books.

    • Kate

      Seconded!!

  54. Shirley

Just let me know when available!

  55. Anne

Ooh yes! Exciting! Would there be a new detective series spinning off from that? Probably a bit much to expect you to keep Logan/ Hoon/ AND another character all active. Maybe Tyler could get a promotion…(there aren’t any Oh How I Laughed emojis available on here). Keep up the cracking work anyway.

  56. Joanna

    Yes please

  57. Linda

I’m intrigued, can’t wait to read this book.

  58. Kath

Sounds intriguing JD and no doubt will be a great read, so yes I’d love to read it!

  59. Margot

Sounds like a great story can’t wait for the book to come out

  60. Gail

Yep, I’d definitely buy it. Sounds like a great idea.

  61. Abigail

    Yep – write it

  62. Meralin

I like the idea of a series featuring DI Filson (who I haven’t caught up with yet in the last Logan books) but not knowing anything about Heather but what you’ve written next to your mock-up front cover, I’m sure I would enjoy this book. So get cracking!

  63. Christine

    Hell yes, I’m in!

  64. Jill

Oh please, do it! I certainly will buy it. Another series??

  65. Jillie

    Yep. Sounds great! Do it!

  66. Sally

I was ambivalent to Heather when we first met her, but was starting to warm to her a little by the end. Maybe she will do a ‘Hoon’ and become a favourite character in her own books. (I hated Hoon when I first met him, but absolutely love him in his own series.)

  67. Monita

Personally, I’d be thrilled if you wrote female lead detective books!! (I say bookS because I hope you’d write more than just one…) I love Logan, of course, and his crazy, adorable gang but I have to be honest and say I haven’t been able to get into Hoon as much as I’d hoped. He’s actually a little too violent for me (maybe a little too blokey, too??!!) You’ve already conquered writing up strong female characters so a lead role would obviously be the next step. Crossing fingers you don’t let this idea go 🙂 x

    • Kelli

      This is a great idea!

  68. K

Yeah, as long as the usual police procedures and character developments follow your other books, and with a female lead detective – awesome! Being from Aus, I thoroughly enjoy the Scottish settings. Hurry up 🙂

    • Tina

Yes definitely! Hope you’re not thinking of retiring Logan though ? X

  69. Heather

Sounds like something I would really enjoy, I’ve loved every one of your books so far so yes, please!

    • Hannah

Would definitely buy this. Sounds really good. Do you think Logan might make a cameo appearance?

    • Pat

I would definitely buy the book.. a great concept for s crime novel.

    • Jackie

I like the outline and hope that it will lead into another series with complex characters like the Logan and Hoon series

    • Marce

Sounds interesting. When will you have it done? 🙂

  70. Jeff

    Sounds like a great idea!

  71. Fiona

Please write it, as long as there is done good JD humour along the way, and it doesn’t get too, too gruesome ☺️ (ie be more like the last few Logan books)

  72. Wendy

    Big yes from me!

  73. Weezy

I adore what you have done with Hoon, so I say go for it.

  74. Barry

    Do it! Sounds intriguing.

  75. Gareth

It’s got me hooked. You’d better finish it now!

  76. Gabriela

Sounds great. I would definitely read it!!!

  77. Mairi

Sounds a reasonable plot line. I would buy it. Of course I would buy all J.D’ s ( not space fiction) books,), ( & well, not Hoon books) but all the others.

  78. Debra

Hi, sounds good – already interested in what happens next – would defo buy it !

  79. Katy

Sorry, but do you have a choice? Honestly, when a story just pops up in my head (though mostly it hits me in my dreams), it will haunt me and nag at me and make me a mess until I succumb and write it down. Safe yourself from misery and hop off to your keyboard. Shoo!

  80. Birthe

Oooh, that sounds nasty – yes, please!

  81. John

    Sounds good. Go for it!

  82. Dianne

Definitely sounds like a plot with legs …but what else are you thinking of?

  83. Andy

Sounds great to me, one I would definitely read

  84. Julie

If you write it I will buy it.

  85. John

Sounds like a great read already. Go for it!!

  86. Gerry

Plot twist, she turns out to be Hoon’s daughter from a one night stand in his youth………..

  87. Audrey

    I’d buy that!

  88. Kay

Sounds right up my street … go on, do it!! 🙂

  89. Nic

Yep I’d read it, and pretty sure you could have a few crossover moments with Hoon and Logan just to add to the mix.

  90. Joan

Oh Mammy, Daddy it’s a yes from me, would love to read about her character and how she became the person she is now

  91. Wendy

    Yep!

  92. L

As long as it doesn’t mean the demise of Hoon and Logan go for it.

  93. Carol

Favourite Author. New book. Female lead. No brainer, of course I want you to to write it.

  94. John

Go for it JD – sounds intriguing!
Just read Island of Hugh, a great departure from the usual Logan/ Hoon shenanigans – albeit with the strong influence, I’m sure of Mrs JD!

Keep up the great work- thanks.

    John

  95. Claire

It’s an interesting story concept and you’re an awesome author who can be trusted to do a good job with it. So, yes please! 🙂

  96. Theresa

I love the premise and already a strong character. I’d definitely buy this book.

  97. Karen

I’d definitely buy it as I love all your books. Keep going with Logan though – love him and all his quirks.

  98. Sarah

Sounds brilliant. Perhaps Logan, Hoon and the gang can have cameos 🙂

  99. Chris

I want to read it NOW!

  100. Maggie

Go for it. I already want to start reading it based on the blurb, lol.

  101. Lesley

Spine’s tingling already but she will have a dark sense of humour too?

  102. Sue

    Yes definitely!!

  103. Mary

    Definitely of interest 👍

  104. Linda

Sounds like you have 100% agreement on this idea. So I’ll add my support too. Looking forward to reading more about Heather Filson in due course.

  105. Donna

Yes. It would be nice to read a female lead from you. The storyline sounds good with the personal element and as we already know Heather it won’t take too long to get into the swing of things

  106. Robert

As long as there are a good few laughs along the way !

  107. Peter

Great idea and with your writing skills will make book 1 of another new series
    Thanks

  108. Jan

I am intrigued and want to learn more. I do have a particular taste ie, I hate anything written in the first person. I am a huge fan of your writing style so know I will be one of the first to read this if it does get published.

  109. Liz

Stop writing emails and get writing this book… and please keep using Angus King to narrate.

  110. Jean

Absolutey! Although what Hoon might say about a female lead detective?? Bring it on!

  111. Jane

Looking forward to rest of story, the short blurb grabbed my attention and left me wanting the rest of the book. Go for it !

  112. Bernadette

Sounds amazing, defo would buy it , the bold heather. ,yes bring it on.

  113. Caroline

Oh yes please! Sounds good to me.

  114. Stuart

    Thumb’s up from me

  115. Janet

It sounds intriguing, I would definitely buy it. In fact I want it now!!
I am halfway through your Logan books and still have the Hoon books to read but I’m hooked on your style of writing, your plots and the humour but also the tears.

  116. Lorna

Well isn’t it finished yet, come on it sounds great

  117. Donna

Sounds like a good idea but would it be different from the Petrie or a link to the Petrie story? It does sound like it’s going along similar track…. However, saying that I’d read any books you’d written as I love the characters and the humour as well as the serous case details.

  118. Heather

This sounds great – would definitely read it 👍

  119. Sarah

I’d say write it if you fancy writing it and don’t if you don’t. Although the fact it’s jumped fully formed in to your head seems like it’s meant to be written? I’d buy it 😊.

  120. Alex

Hmmmm she wasn’t my favourite in the Logan book but it would be interesting to read a book where she is the lead protagonist as that is often different.

  121. Debbie

I would love a new character but don’t forget about Hoon and and Logan! I love all your books and wait patiently for the new releases! Amazing books!

  122. Joyce

I’ll read it! Didn’t register that Heather had already been introduced but sounds like a good plot

  123. Jackie

Oh yes, sounds great! Please write another series!

  124. Jacqueline

Sounds really good and intriguing, totally my genre so go for it.

  125. Jen

I’m not sure. It sounds like many others I’ve read, victim becomes detective, old killer returns, haunted by past etc.

What I love about your books is that they are unique in how they deliver the imperfect characters, their foibles and skills, humour, plots. There aren’t many thrillers I’ve read where I actually laugh out loud.

Please don’t get rid of Logan or Hoon. I, of course, will give Filson a shot but please don’t lose your uniqueness in making Filson like every other novel out there, with few exceptions of the greats, obviously.

  126. Angus

    Definitely do it!

  127. Jane

Yes! Hurry up and write it 😁

  128. Linda

Aye seems good jist get thon sister of Hoons intae the plot!

  129. Sue

Yes !! go for it. I will buy it, maybe Hoon could come in and help Heather out 🙏
That way if it’s successful you could maybe do a series.
Any excuse for more books 👍

  130. Amanda

Keep writing looks like the beginning of a good read.

  131. Kim

Brilliant idea can’t wait to read it 👍

  132. Ianthe

    ✔️✔️✔️
Get it out there. Can’t wait!!

  133. Sarah

Sounds great! And maybe written from a female character’s. perspective which would be new 😊

  134. Cath

I really warmed to her character in the last Logan book so would definitely read it and hopefully a new detective series to enjoy.

  135. Paola

Sounds a bit scary? would it have humour?

  136. Joanne

So, ok when is it published I need to buy this!!! Sounds brilliant, you really should write this 😊📖📖

  137. Neil

This would be right up my street. Just love the thought of actually catching these peoples. I would definitely give a read.
Would DI Heather Filson then get her own run of stories?

  138. Geraldyne

I would buy it. Just remember to be kind to cats…..

  139. Brenda

Sounds good hope it will be the start of a new series.
Put some humour in with a “Tyler” character 😀

  140. Sue

Nah! Sounds crap!………………I’m joking! 🙃 I have read and loved every one of the Logan and Hoon books so I’m sure it will be bloody amazing 🤩 Crack on!! x

  141. anne

Yes would definitely buy it got my attention straight away x

  142. Julia

I think it’s well worth developing because of the existing strong character and have confidence that you can raise it above the works based on similar broadly premised storylines (is that a valid phrase?) already published by your fellow scribes. You go, kiddo!

  143. Margaret

    Sounds good

  144. Pam

I adore Logan, Hoon and the rest of the gang, but sometimes it’s nice to have fresh characters to get to know. I would certainly buy this book in a heartbeat x

  145. Mairi

Sounds amazing….and will lead to yet another addiction for me

  146. Jean

    Fab. When’s it out?

  147. Mark

    I’m in

  148. Alma

This sounds great to me, I’d definitely buy it! I’m a fan of Heather.

  149. Jill

    Sounds amazing. Get writing! X

  150. Yvonne

Get writing! Sounds very interesting and loving the fact still keeping it scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

  151. Steve

Would “add to cart”, can see some great opportunities to show a surprising linkage or two with other characters.

You might need to find a female narrator for the audiobook/s, or perhaps have a male / female pairing?

  152. Joe

Go for it, sounds a good idea

  153. Karen

I would read it’s I enjoy all of your books. Something new from an author you like with different characters and locations is always refreshing. Pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and start on the book

  154. Iain

Like a lot of readers Heather was a bit too much on introduction, of course by the end of the story we had warmed to her a little with the hint of her earlier life.

This plot-line does sound vaguely familiar to me and probably from one of your peers Scottish crime.

Definitely agree with the consensus here that it would be a good story as you draw your characters really well.

I would vote yes despite generally feeling that male authors writing female leads can be a bit meh! Your stories do not seem to suffer from that flaw so more power to your elbow.

If you can be bothered to write it I (and a whole host of others I am sure) will most certainly be bothered enough to read it!

Good Luck and i look forward to it

  155. Annie

Yes. Definitely write it. I also like the cover.

  156. Julia

Anything written by you will be read by me.

  157. Katharine

    Yes Please!

    • Tamara

Would be very interested to learn more about Heather!
Go on in now, start tapping those keys!! 😉

  158. Henk

Sounds great as a plot and a new detective to boot. Get it printed !! Can’t wait but it will have to be good to beat DCI Logan.

  159. Hilary

Now that was a great taster of a brilliant story, I’m hungry more so hurry up and get that story out as fast as you can before I burst with anticipation x

  160. Kath

    Yep, count me in

  161. Fiona

Sounds like it has great potential. Hope you write it.

  162. Sylvia

Sounds like it’s a book your subconscious is telling you to write!
    Go for it 😁

  163. Mary

Sounds like it could be the start of a new series. I can’t wait for you to write and publish it, so I can read it. Thanks.

  164. Anne

Oh yes please I’m really interested to know what happens

  165. Colin

Interesting that the large majority of posts are from females. Are they just more chatty or does that reflect the audience?

In answer to your question: yes please!

  166. Vikki

Sounds right up my street. Do it!

  167. Polly

Can you just hurry up and write it now, please… I need to know the outcome 🤣.

  168. John

I am sure it will be a great read, like all your other books. Plausibility will be a challenge: why would someone who abducted five girls in quick succession stop, then resume thirty years later with the same modus operandi?

  169. Jim

If its half as good as the Logan and Hoon books, bring it on

  170. Pam

Sounds like the start of a new series (hopefully)that’ll work very well.

  171. Lesley

    Yep! Go for it!

  172. Mike

Sounds great. If you can turn her into a hero as you have done with that nasty man Hoon I will fork out to follow her story!

  173. Dave

    JD as Nike would say
    “JUST DO IT”.

  174. Hugh

As long as it doesn’t distract you from more Logan and Hoon books JD, I would definitely buy this. Powerful idea.

  175. Liz-Anne

Sounds good. Nice to have a female lead
Keep the others coming (no pressure)

  176. DAVID

Do it!!!! Though how you are going to find the time and keep us all happy with the Logan and Hoon novels I have no idea. One of the Joys of finding you as an author, is not only the great writing but the frequency of being able to visit the world of Logan and Hoon.

  177. Fiona

Sounds like it could be a page turner of a book once the full story is completed

  178. Sheila

Yes, please. Go for it Barry.

  179. Janet

As earlier commentators have remarked, Heather was initially extremely unattractive but was being redeemed by the end. I’m always interested in ‘cold’ cases coming back to life too. My only reservation is that the protagonist and/or the premise seem vaguely familiar: has someone else already done something similar? Or is my memory just failing? Entirely possible!

  180. Fiona

Sounds like it could be a page turner of a book once the full story is completed. It could also go a long way to explain why she seems cold hearted on one hand but caring on another especially with sinead

  181. Karen

Sounds like a good story I would read it

  182. Elaine

Definitely got potential and I would definitely buy it.

  183. Anthea

Definitely ~ I like Heather’s character already, some of her behaviours could well be to cover up past trauma ~ martial arts, lack of emotional empathy, assertiveness etc! It will be good to get to know her a little more ~ I’m sure Shona won’t mind!

  184. Tracy

    The premise sounds interesting.

Oddly enough, when I decide whether or not to purchase a book, if I don’t know the author then the cover picture/title is the first pull, and if the back blurb sounds interesting then I’m hooked – purchase made!

  185. Isabel

It’s the kind of book I would be interested in buying.

  186. Jo

Ohh this sounds good. I would definitely read/listen to it.

  187. Pauline

Would buy, if it’s anything like your other books, it’ll be a winner

  188. William

Would a ski mask last for thirty years or is it a copycat? Don’t give up the Logan and Hoon, they are different and I’m not sure this would be different enough.

  189. Rose

I am already intrigued ,and now want to read the book ,but would like to know where this will be based ,hopefully another part of Scotland ,how about the Morayshire area .I have always wanted to write ,but just never got around to it ,and have lots of scraps of paper around my house with ideas written ,so it was good to know that a fully published and established writer does the same thing as i did years ago ,at least your books are brilliant enough to get so many followers ,good luck with the new book ,hope to read it soon .Rose

  190. Claire

    Sounds fantastic! Do it!

  191. Teresa

I would buy it if it was available on audible as I seem to have a problem with NOT buying your books and would read it with an open mind. I *REALLY* disliked Heather in the last book and would be interested to see if that changed with learning more about her.

I am probably in the minority in that I always enjoyed Hoon’s character even when he was being a jerk of a boss and absolutely love his series.

  192. Sarah

Think it’s a great idea to have a story around Heather, she was becoming an interesting character in the Logan book and loved her interaction with Sinead. I thought the balance went a bit too male when DS Caitlin was killed off and was glad of Sinead and Shona coming in… so think this will be a winner!

  193. Steven

    Sounds great!

  194. Ian

Sounds great. How soon can you get it finished?

  195. Janet

    Sounds good to me.

  196. Barry

Definitely a book I’d read. Could be a good start to a series.

  197. Susan

It sounds a good plot , hope there will be some twists and surprises. If the price is sensible I would buy it

  198. Jeff

Tremendous potential in this one! The inspector will have to go back into her past to dredge up bad memories, and the killer probably has a special relationship with her, wanting to taunt her with the new murders to eventually meet. Question of why she was spared will be key, maybe, to unraveling the mystery. I would read it in a heartbeat! Good luck!

  199. Audrea

Sounds like a winner, I’d buy it!

  200. Joyce

    Go for it!

  201. Lisa

Dang it Kirk, let Barry out to play. Otherwise sounds interesting. I’d read it.

  202. Marg

Sounds good! I would enjoy reading it.

  203. Karen

Sounds like to beginning of a great series. Now just finish it!

  204. Alexandra

Sounds like a fab idea, and definitely the sort of thing that I would usually read. My only worry is DI Filson, I really couldn’t stand her in the last Logan book, she was waaaay too annoying.

  205. Jan

Like several others on here I didn’t take to Heather, I thought she was a shit-stirring bitch especially to Shona. That said, I thought Hoon was an irredeemable arsehole before he got his own series and now he’s one of my favourite characters. All of which is a long way of saying I think you should go for it, I’d definitely give it a whirl.

  206. Evelyn

Sounds great! Would love to read it.

  207. Kevin

Come on, write it. You know you already were.

  208. Mary

Definitely liking this – get writing Barry the sooner the better, no time for exercise bikes either, out by Christmas will do just fine ha ha…..

  209. Amanda

I’d definitely read it. Hope you write it….soon!

  210. Jac

Sounds intriguing. I’d buy anything written by you tbh. Your ability to make me laugh out loud one minute and sob the next is unparalleled, all interwoven into blooming brilliant plots with incredible characters. Just do it… you know you want to xx

  211. Jackie

    Go for it sounds good

  212. Dagmara

I think it sounds great, but I agree with some of the above comments, I don’t want Logan and /or Hoon to finish so as long as you feel comfortable with keeping all 3 going on forever 😁😂 Also as a massive audiobook fun of this series please can Angus still do it? I just cannot imagine having someone else read these, it just wouldn’t be the same! You’re a great writer and with your wit and great sense of humour I’m sure it’ll be another hit!☺️ Thank you.

  213. Dagmara

I think it sounds great, but I agree with some of the above comments, I don’t want Logan and /or Hoon to finish so as long as you feel comfortable with keeping all 3 going on forever 😁😂 Also as a massive audiobook fun of these series please can Angus still do it? I just cannot imagine having someone else read these, it just wouldn’t be the same! You’re a great writer and with your wit and great sense of humour I’m sure it’ll be another hit!☺️ Thank you.

  214. Ian

Go for it JD but don’t forget the humour, it’s what sets you apart!

  215. Elizabeth

    Oh yeah, bring it !

  216. Lucy

I like the idea of a strong female DI being the main protagonist. You have such a unique writing style and it would be interesting to see how you develop her character.

  217. Lindsay

    yes please

  218. Valerie

As I really enjoy your books, I would definitely give it a read. Heather was annoying but at the same time fragile. So to see her character development would be interesting

  219. Joyce

Sounds good I’d definitely read it

  220. Sheila

Yes,/that sounds good-might explain her attitude-sounds like the beginning of another good series-love Hoon btw

  221. Deb

    Yes yes

  222. Susan

    Yes. Would definitely read that!

  223. Linda

I would read it. It is an intriguing concept and I like the way you develop characters and describe situations and surroundings so the odds are very good I would like it a lot.

  224. Simon

    I’d buy it.
Maybe there could be a Logan cross over in future books.
Or, dare I say it, a Cal Carver crossover, Lol

  225. Anne

OMGOMGOMG Have you read Tana French’s In the Woods!???? (If not, don’t. Definitely do not. It is the greatest book ever, but The Girl Who Once Was runs the risk of becoming derivative if you do. Plus, she’s Irish – you don’t have time for that.) It has a very similar premise and is one of the best books I have ever read. I got chills reading your plot hook.

DO IT, DO IT, DO IT.

PS I hate Heather Filson, but I want you to write her backstory so our hater fan club can get attached to her. It is written.

    • jdkirk

Hmm. Yes, a bit too similar. I’ll have to have a rethink!

  226. Jan

    Go for it!

  227. Sandi

Sounds interesting. If your characters are developed as in the DC I Logan series and the Robert Hoon series, it will be great.

  228. Julie

Just let us know when it’s available to pre-order.

  229. Mike

    Definitely a winning idea

  230. Bill

I’m one of those who struggled to like her, but as others have said, you have a way of making such characters likeable and here’s more strength to your elbow … and pen … well, keyboard … well you know what I mean

  231. Douglas

Interesting. This is a character from the Logan series? Or just a coincidental name?

  232. Cathy

You had me at A DI Heather Filson novel. Her character grew on me and if this reads anything like your Logan or Hoon books then I would definitely read it.

  233. Emily

Sounds like something I would like to read so go for it.

  234. Leisa

    Yes!! Definitely!

  235. Malcolm

    Do it!

  236. Sandy

As long as Logan and Hoon don’t object I’ll pre-order it

  237. Steve

Wow! They just write themselves! Just kidding.
    Please do write the book.
We are all anxious to go there, and inflict a bit of justice on this guy.

  238. Monica

    I’d buy it.

But heck, I would buy it if it was a cookbook that you wrote. I enjoy your writing style and humor!! Be great also to have Angus King narrating how to make chocolate chip cookies!!

  239. Rob

Thanks JD. I reckon that I would read anything that you write. We always pre-order your books and are never disappointed.

  240. Phillip

I like the idea and would definitely read it. I hesitate only in that it would take your time away from more Logan and Hoon–especially Hoon.

  241. Steve

Plot sounds feasible, but it will all depend on the characterization of course. Is this intended as a new series or a one off? If it is to be a series and you introduce new characters, do they have to be fatally flawed? That format is getting old now.

  242. Amy

Omg I’m sold, you have to write this. I got literal chills reading that blurb! Love all your DCI Logan books, yet to read the Hoon ones but he’s a right character and I’m sure they’re brilliant too.

  243. Andrew

The idea sounds ok to me. I would certainly put it on my Kindle wish list……but please also make sure it meets one of my criteria when buying Kindle books…..it must be a MINIMUM of 300 pages long, and preferably 350 to 450 pages!!

  244. Kathy

    Interested

  245. Moira

Think you definitely need to bite the bullet and write it. Sure it will be yet another cracking read. Despite the serious storyline will it have your usual dark humour to balance the stress?

  246. Carol

Liked the title, it would catch my eye in a book shop. Outline of story good, will buy it once written. 😀😉

  247. Dominique

“It is not the tale, it is he who tells it”

I love your writing style and I’m positive that you won’t let us down. #AllIn

  248. Anne

Every book you’ve written has been great, loved them all and this sounds really intriguing so it’s a yes from me.

  249. Brooke

Yep, would totally buy. Please do write it!

  250. Heather

Intriguing – that’s me hooked already. And not just because the central character is a common shrub like myself. Definitely go for it… but please don’t neglect Jack and co!

  251. Joan

    I’ll absolutely read it.

  252. Lindy

Ooooh yes please, I love your books in audiobook format.

  253. Elizabeth

I’m drawn to stories like the one you describe here, and that’s why I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve read a similar storyline recently. ‘Course, I can’t remember what it was called, but I’ll try to find it and send you the publisher’s blurb…Cheers!

  254. Kirsten

    Sounds great!

  255. Michael

Like EVERYONE else here (or so it seems), I’d read the book. I’ve enjoyed Logan & Hoon (my favorite) & always look forward to your next book. I admit that I like some of them better than others. You’ve managed to get me reading other writer’s books about “non-US” characters, which is quite an accomplishment for this Florida boy. Prior to Logan, I didn’t even know there were any authors over the pond beyond Dick Francis. I like the idea of a female lead character as it’s different… I enjoy how your books’ characters “overlap” & this fits that template. I think you should find some way to somehow link Olivia into it but I have difficulty writing an email so I’m probably not the best source for any ideas.

  256. Jeremy

You somehow made me care about Hoon and I have no doubt you’d manage to do the same with Filson. I’d love to read this. I can’t wait to find out who will narrate the audio – I can only assume it won’t be Angus King if this has a female lead?

  257. Curt

Like all of the other comments, get cracking and write it. Cant wait.

  258. Stephen

    Sounds intriguing.
    Write it already

  259. Mary

Sounds interesting, write it, I will buy it.

  260. Cydney E.

The cover is amazing – SO great looking! Don’t change a thing. And agree with other comments that it’s time to put your skills to a strong female lead.

  261. Marsha

I would love to read something with a female lead detective. I love all your books. This one would be added on to the list!

  262. John

I like the idea very much, a female lead is very 21st century as well, yes please.

  263. Carolyn

Yes please, I didn’t take to Heather at first but she is growing on me. With her introduction in the Logan book, it feels the right time to discover more about her and give her a storyline of her own. (But do keep the Logan books coming please!!)

  264. Laurie

    Yes, please, of course.

  265. Amber-Shea

I like the concept of the plot itself, I’m just not sure about centering it around Heather. Without spoiling City of Scars for anyone who hasn’t yet read it, that’s a bit too much trauma for one person. Not that it’s impossible for so much tragedy to befall one person, but how believable would it be? Personally, that’s a bit of a stretch for me.

  266. Rebecca

I would love to read it! Sounds like a great book.

  267. Lydia

Do it! Go for it! Consider this as a long distance kick in the bollocks from California. Add a character named Lydia and I might buy an extra copy of the book. 😁

  268. Rosie

    YES, YES, YES……I’m in!!!!!!!!!!

    Can’t wait.

  269. Debra

Yep sounds good, would also like it to have a character not dissimilar to Hoon in that I belly laugh at some of the things he comes out with

  270. Anne

I think it’s a great idea. I love your books and this sounds very interesting.

  271. Mandy

    Great premise

  272. Liza

    Has me intrigued already …

  273. Cathy

Mmmm sounds like if might have legs. Finding out a bit more about Filsons past and what makes her tick could be interesting especially as she isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Oh but wait neither was Hoon and look what happened to him!

  274. Tracey

I’m in! Write on and publish as soon as possible!!

  275. Steph

Yep. Please write it. Sounds great to me. I wouldn’t mind more of Heather.

  276. Philip

    Oh fuck, yes!

  277. Donna

Do it. Would really like that. Make it a series.

  278. Cheryl

I like everything you write. So, go for it.

  279. Vivian

Absolutely get that story into boom form!

  280. Jan

I’m intrigued, but are we married to the name ‘Filson’ because it doesn’t exactly flow, in my mind voice…

  281. Sherrie

    Sounds great.

  282. Deidre

Yes please! Sounds like another winner.

  283. Gary

Sounds like it could be gripping so I say go ahead, Gary, NZ

  284. Kristina

OMG, this sounds great! Write it, write it, write it!!! A whole new series…yay! I hate Heather, but I’m still excited by that synopsis. I may even learn to like her…maybe. (Exclamation mark overkill, but I love the idea of this book, seriously. LOL) 🙂

  285. Kris

Do it…more needs done to bring attention to missing and exploited children, and what better way?

  286. Karly

Ooooh I knew I had heard that name before. Obnoxious and brave!!! Definitely needs a book/series of her own even if to go around offending everyone. Would love to hear more about Heather’s dark past!!! I’m all in!!

  287. sunnie

I would love to read about Heathers ordeal. It has made her who she is—tough, take charge, no BS. She is also vulnerable but does not want anyone to know. She also still has some deep feelings, call it nostalgia, for what she and Logan shared. And she misses that and does not think she will ever be close like that again with anyone. No trust. I can relate. Cannot wait to read it. Cheers

  288. Julia

It is a very sound idea with lots of suspense and opportunity for red herrings. Go for it. I’ll read it!

  289. Dot

Sounds like a winner to me. I’d definitely read it

  290. Lynn

I would be interested in giving it a try but she was not a favorite character in the Logan series. Not sure I could change my mind on her. Truth be told I have struggled with Hoon. Never once struggled with Logan from start to finish. Logan is right up there with Ruth Galloway for writing perfection for “British procedurals”

  291. LeLanya

Sounds a bit like one of your DCI Logan stories? Would still read it tho – love your writing!

  292. Crystal

Would LOVE to see this side of DI Filson! I hope you do write this!

  293. Cathy

I agree with other comments. Yes please, write this one. I would love to read it.

  294. Giselle

She’s got an edge but isn’t without insight (though she might not deem you worthy of seeing the latter). I’m a fan. But the “do you know where the children are” trope can stand a rethink. 😉 Sister Carol Ann did Not approve of me reading “Where Are the Children” at 9, but look at me now! ;)~

  295. Ray

Heather grew on me in City of Scars, as she did on Jack and Shona. Your pitch sounds great, especially if some of “the gang” pitches in at times. One small concern, but there are so many procedurals featuring female leads with similar “Lost Girl” déjà vu plots that it may be hard to be original. What might be original is a plot interwoven around the modern science showing the insidious policy stupidity (or cupidity) of COVID policy including lockdowns, vaccinations, masks, etc. You don’t even have to mention WEF’s Great Reset, merely hint at it. Perhaps you could emphasize the skepticism of Heather (and friends) as she works around the “public health” as well as police bureaucracy and political correctness straight-jackets. Heck, she could even be instrumental in bringing Boris down down south. Anyway, just a thought. Of course, Scotland may not yet be ready for a dash of truth, but IMHO whoever does it first is going to be a star, and who better than you?

  296. Mandy

Sounds like another belter is on the way!
I’d be really interested to read the rest of this story. Despite not liking her much, I could tell Heather had many layers to her with the few hints we read about her previous life. I’m intrigued about the guy in the red ski mask and what happened to the missing girls now. I’d definitely pre-order this!

  297. Debbie

Please let Hoon be in it……..

  298. Anita

Get’s my vote. Now how long till you finish it cos need something new to read????

  299. Lorraine

Sounds interesting and I am sure it would be as good as your other books. I would purchase this book.

  300. Pam

Sound like a definite choice for me. Look forward to the publication,

  301. Teri

I would like a new series with a strong female lead. I hope you plan on writing multiple books with this character.

  302. Karen

Would love to read a book about Heather, especially relating to her background. It’s a thumbs up from me! Please, please continue with the Logan books though. I love them!
Not a huge fan of Hoon, only as a secondary figure in Logan’s books.

  303. Denis

This, I think, will be a great book and I will certainly buy read and enjoy because it is a J D Kirk book. I still say though, thank heavens for Logan, Hoon, Grimm, Kett and Lasser because we seem to be being drowned in female DI’s at the moment but I have no doubt this one will be different.

  304. Val

Thumbs up from me… sounds very interesting and intriguing.

  305. HIlary

    I’d definitely read that!
But could you please slow down?????
I work two jobs and am taxi driver to a teenage rugby player, there aren’t enough hours in the day! 🙂

  306. Christine

    Sounds 👍

  307. Christine

Sounds just as fantastic as all of your books

  308. Christine

I think sound of this book will be a really great read. Can’t wait for it read it.
    Christine

  309. Christine

I think this would be a great book and possibly another series can’t wait for this to be on sale.
I have read all DCI Logan books and waiting patiently for next one to come out l thoughts
the Hoon books were really good as well

  310. Christine

I would love to read “Heather “ new book maybe another series looking forward to reading it I’m a great fan of dci Logan and Hoon books

  311. Christine

Sound very interesting and am sure it would be as good Logan and Hoon

  312. Mary

You have no choice but to write it… you can not leave us wondering for the rest of our lives.

    • Jan

It has piqued my attention. I would buy it.
I can forsee a new series coming on and I am pleased you have a female lead character.
I hope you stick with your humourous approach within this book.
So my advice is to crack on, thank you 🙂

  313. Dorota

So now that about 1001 folk said ‘do it’, it’s no longer a matter of ‘whether’ but ‘when’ 😀

  314. Kenny

Looking forward to discovering some more interesting characters and being part of their lives in the days to come.

(Last year almost put Jack, Tyler and Hoon on my Christmas card list).

  315. Julie

    Yes, I’m intrigued already!

  316. Cherelle

100% want to read this book!

  317. June

    I’m in! I’m already sold 🙈

  318. Sue

Sounds great. I would definitely read it! Just don’t stop writing the Logan books 🙂

  319. Fiona

Yep, I buy, read it and read it again

  320. Laura

I would read it, especially if it’s the start of a new series. Generally, I’m not a huge fan of books about crimes against children, but I liked your handling of these topics in the DCI Logan books so I’d give it a chance.

  321. Rick Stephenson

    Yes JD
I would be interested, it’s your style I like. So I have no worries concerning the all the good things I know you will come up with.

  322. Madonna

The idea is intriguing and I like the character. She will definitely have some deep hidden issues to deal with. Excellent! Go for it I say!

  323. Jenny

    I’m in for sure.

  324. Rosemary

Not sure. Love the characters in your books and being able to follow their stories from book to book, this new book would need that to engage me.
The age of the killer might be an issue?

  325. Lorraine

Whatever you write is guaranteed to be brilliant, so YES – please do it, and soon!

  326. Kevin

Don’t leave me hanging – crack on and get it written.

  327. Mari

Sounds as if it could be another good read. Possibly with a twist.

  328. Mike

One of the things I like best about your writing, apart from the choice language which has me laughing out loud, is that the team working with Logan are almost a family that I have become a member of. Even your Hoon novels paid lip service to them through reference and inclusion.
Do you see Filson, who struck me as a bit of a loner/renegade creating that sort of relationship with a team?
Apart from that, I will read whatever you write – I like your style. Tarry not.

  329. Kath

I’m already hooked and wanting to know what happens next. I bet you could make a shopping list seem very readable. I always know i’ll be reading into the night when a new Jack or Hoon book arrives on my kindle. Keep em coming.

  330. Mark

I, for one (and maybe others), would not buy it. I have a problem with stories about the abduction of children; regardless of the outcome. This, unfortunately, hits just a bit too close to home with all the missing children that have never been found and to have a story about five children, four of whom are still missing, is not something that is even remotely entertaining to me. Go ahead and write it since there are others that would enjoy the story but as for me nope.

  331. Lisa

    Bring it.

  332. Sarah

It would be very interesting to see how such a strong character evolves from those tough beginnings. I’d definitely buy it. I’ve really enjoyed all your other books (incl. the Cal Carver series), although I imagine Heather Filson’s one may be not be as light hearted. Please do it!

  333. Mike

Yep, give it a go, so long as we don’t get lost with the theme ducking and diving as in the Hoon books. Bit worried about what you do down by that stream that you say gives you ideas. Throw in a fishing line.
    Cheers. Mike

  334. Beth

I think it sounds great! I would definitely read it.

  335. Maria

Sounds like a great story, I’d definitely read it!

  336. Mitch

As Hoon probably wouldn’t say – nice one!

  337. Dwayne

Sounds like this could be a very good story and based on your other books sign me up

  338. heather

Omg. I’m already wanting more. That would explain her curtness. Yes please.

  339. Nicky

Like my first impressions of Hoon, I’m not Filson’s biggest fan, but I am as hooked on your Hoon series as I am Logan, so I know that I will instantly become hooked on Filson too! Go for it! follow your gut instinct, it is clearly on a winning streak.

The first moment I softened a little to Filson was when she had a ‘moment’ with Sinead outside Tesco, the second moment was in Ben’s house when she divulged her traumatic sexual assault, experienced as a teenager and how she handled it to survive such a life changing event and the third was her ‘moment’ with Shona that resulted in a thawing of their frigid and resentful relationship, so she has plenty hidden layers to explore. As much as I want to dislike her, I am left wanting to know more, so Please, Go For It!

p.s. Request for another character spin off at some point down the line….. Shona, as I am sure she has plenty pathology work put her way that involves others in the force, than Jack and his team, not to mention her Irish upbringing and back story and I think she has the potential to be utterly Hilarious! I’d Love to delve into her life story and antics, please, please, pretty please 😘

  340. Maggie

You go ahead and write it. We’d read it especially since you would write it with your own blend of funny and not-so-funny. Laughing out loud and groaning while biting our nails as we wade through the scary bits with our eyes half closed – but still open enough to keep reading and find out what happens next.

  341. Caroline

Sounds great would definitely buy that

  342. Rose

“ooooh this sounds interesting ..” thats what I say when my hand falls upon a keeper, whether I’m in the library or bookshop or flitting about on kindle!! I am now desperate to see the rest of the story unfold.. Thank, in advance, JD:)

  343. Martha

Would definitely read it. Hope you write it soon.

  344. Carol

Interesting comment from George about generating revenue given the amount of Scottish Crime writers. It seems to me that the idea/plot came first and income, while a necesseity is not the primary focus here. Blood Scotland is a great example of why we always need more Scottish noir books and as you are an excellent writer, I see no reason why you won’t turn this into a best seller – maybe take out the McIlvanney prize 🙂

  345. KATHLEEN

Yep, get writing. Sounds like a winner to me, one I’d definitely read.

  346. Liz

Can’t wait. Let us know when it’s available on pre-order!

  347. Sandra

Can’t wait look forward to this new detective series
